Justin Boseley: The Captain Behind Dead Reckoning Rum

Every great rum brand has a great story behind it, and Dead Reckoning is no exception. At the helm is Justin Boseley — a rum enthusiast turned independent bottler whose obsession with the world’s finest aged spirits has driven him to create something genuinely unique in the Australian market.

From Enthusiasm to Obsession

Justin’s journey into rum began the way most great rum stories do: with a glass that stopped him in his tracks. A chance encounter with a well-aged Barbados rum at a specialty bar opened his eyes to the incredible complexity that rum — long dismissed as a simple cocktail spirit — could achieve when given time, care, and the right conditions.

From that moment, Justin became a student of rum. He studied distillation, visited distilleries across the Caribbean and South Pacific, and developed relationships with the master distillers whose spirits would eventually form the backbone of the Dead Reckoning portfolio.

The Dead Reckoning Philosophy

The name Dead Reckoning comes from the navigational technique used by sailors before GPS — the art of calculating your current position based on a known past position, using speed, direction, and time. For Justin, this perfectly captures his approach to rum: you use everything you know, everything you’ve learned, to chart a course toward something exceptional.

  • Source only the finest base spirits from established distilleries
  • Age and finish in conditions unique to South Australia
  • Never compromise on quality, no matter the cost
  • Tell the story of each rum honestly and completely

Building Something Lasting

What Justin has built with Dead Reckoning isn’t just a business — it’s a statement about what Australian rum can be. By combining the world’s finest source spirits with Australia’s unique ageing environment, he’s creating expressions that couldn’t exist anywhere else on earth.

The bottle numbers are deliberately limited. Each release is a finite, singular thing — a snapshot of a moment in time, a particular cask, a specific set of conditions that will never be exactly replicated. That’s the Dead Reckoning promise: every bottle is the only one of its kind.
